How To Choose a Chiropractor

Many people wonder how do they choose which chiropractor to see? Many times, patients are referred in by their family or friends, or they choose one that is in network with their insurance.  When trying to make this decision,  I suggest you call the chiropractor’s office and ask the following questions :

  1. How does the doctor determine the diagnosis (what is wrong with you) ?   Most doctors will perform an examination and may take x-rays or request x rays you have had taken in the past. An examination is best so that the doctor knows what is actually the issue causing your pain.  You may have headaches, and think it’s coming from your neck, but it could also be coming from tight muscles in your upper back and shoulders.
  2. What type of techniques does the doctor use ? There are so many different techniques that chiropractors use. That is why it is very important that if you do not like the way the doctor works on you – you should try another chiropractor. Every chiropractor practices differently from each other because chiropractic is an “art”  as well as a “science”. For example, some chiropractors only adjust the spine. They do not use any other therapies. Some chiropractors use instruments instead of their hands. Some doctors do nutritional counseling, some use acupuncture, etc. There are a wide variety of way to treat you, but to be the most effective you have to be comfortable with the doctor and the treatments you are receiving.

The office staff should make you feel comfortable in asking these questions, as you and the clinic will be a team if you choose to go there for treatment.

Money should not be the only consideration in making your decision. You know, the saying “you get what you pay for” applies here also.  You want a doctor who will be thorough in the examination and listen to you. While insurance will pay for chiropractic treatment in most cases, there may be services that would benefit you and help you get well quicker.

Make sure you feel a part of the team when choosing chiropractic care.  Your health depends on it!
